Reading and Writing Tutoring

At Dyslexia Practitioner NJ, our Reading and Writing Tutoring program is designed to help every student master the skills needed for lifelong learning. We meet each learner where they are, create a supportive environment, and use evidence-based techniques that really work. Our goal is not just to improve grades, but to build confidence and joy in reading and writing.

Fluency

Fluency is more than just reading words on a page. It is about reading smoothly, with the right pace and natural expression. When students become fluent readers, they move beyond sounding out every word and begin to read with meaning and emotion. This transformation makes reading enjoyable and less of a struggle.

Students who struggle with fluency often read in a slow, choppy way, which can make it hard to understand the story or information in front of them. At Dyslexia Practitioner NJ, we use repeated reading, guided oral reading, and engaging materials to help students become more fluent. We also use technology and games that motivate students to practice reading out loud, building both accuracy and self-esteem. As fluency grows, so does comprehension, allowing students to connect what they read to their own lives and experiences.

Vocabulary

A strong vocabulary is the backbone of reading comprehension and clear writing. When children know more words, they can understand more of what they read and express themselves in richer ways. Building vocabulary is about more than memorizing definitions. We teach students to use context clues, root words, prefixes, and suffixes to unlock meanings. This active approach gives them the skills to figure out new words on their own.

In our sessions, students play word games, read a wide variety of texts, and keep vocabulary journals to track and use new words. We encourage asking questions and being curious about language, helping students become lifelong learners and effective communicators.

Seven ways to boost vocabulary:

Read regularly across different genres and topics

Keep a dictionary or thesaurus handy for quick reference

Use a journal to track and use new words in sentences

Learn a word each day and share it with family

Explore word roots, prefixes, and suffixes for word building

Play word games like Scrabble or crosswords

Practice new words in real conversations and writing

Spelling

Spelling is a challenge for many students, especially those with dyslexia or other language based learning differences. Yet, spelling is a skill that can be systematically taught and improved. Our approach goes beyond rote memorization. We help students understand why words are spelled the way they are by exploring word origin, structure, and patterns.

Through multisensory techniques such as tracing words, saying sounds out loud, and using visual cues students learn to remember and reproduce spelling patterns. We also teach strategies to check and correct their own spelling, fostering independence. Over time, students become more confident writers who are less frustrated by spelling mistakes.

Sight Words

Sight words, sometimes called high frequency words, are common words that often do not follow phonics rules. Being able to instantly recognize sight words frees students from stopping to sound out every word, making reading smoother and more enjoyable.

We teach sight words through engaging repetition, hands-on activities, and fun games. Students use flashcards, write sentences, and practice sight words in context so they remember them naturally. As students become comfortable with more sight words, they read with greater speed, confidence, and comprehension.

Decoding and Word Study

Decoding is the process of breaking down words into sounds and blending them together. It is one of the first and most important skills for reading success. We teach students how letters and combinations represent specific sounds, building a strong foundation for reading new words confidently.

Word Study takes this further by helping students see patterns and relationships among words. Activities include word sorting, exploring families of words, and investigating roots and affixes. We encourage students to keep a word study notebook, where they record interesting discoveries and practice new patterns. By understanding how words are constructed, students become stronger in both reading and spelling.

Read Naturally Program

The Read Naturally Program is a powerful, research-proven reading intervention that uses teacher modeling, repeated reading, and ongoing progress monitoring. Students listen to stories read aloud, practice reading the same text multiple times, and track their own growth with visual graphs and feedback.

This program is ideal for students who need extra support in fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and motivation. By using high interest, age appropriate texts and audio support, Read Naturally makes reading practice effective and fun. Students gain not only skills but also pride in their progress, boosting their willingness to read.

Reading With TLC

Reading With TLC features innovative programs like Lively Letters and Sight Words You Can See. These programs use stories, music, and multisensory techniques to help students of all abilities learn critical literacy skills. Lively Letters transforms abstract letters and sounds into memorable characters and stories, making phonics accessible for even reluctant learners.

Sight Words You Can See uses colorful visuals and mnemonic cues to help students memorize challenging words. Both programs are especially effective for children with poor phonic skills, memory weaknesses, or visual processing difficulties. By making learning hands on and playful, Reading With TLC helps all students become successful readers.

Every tutoring session is designed to meet each students unique needs. We partner with families, celebrate every success, and strive to make reading and writing a source of confidence and joy.
